Reception – Symmetry paintings

This week we combined our art lesson with some fun maths! Our lesson was based on our story book of the week ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We linked this to maths by looking at symmetry. We began by folding a piece of white paper in half and then opening it out flat. Each child then painted on one side only. All the children looked at their teacher with confusion. Then the magic happened! Those confused faces turned in to surprised and amazed! After painting on one side of the page half a butterflies body, the children then folded the paper in half and then re-opened it to see their symmetry design. This activity lead to lovely conversations around symmetry and being able to visualise what symmetry is. Reception enjoyed this so much they then continued their symmetry painting in to their choosing time by creating other effects and animals.
