Governors

Governor Day

The Governing Body of Alban Wood Primary School

The Department for Education (as stated in the DfE ‘Governors’ Handbook’, January 2015, p. 7) define the purpose of a governing body as being ‘the strategic leaders of our schools and have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education. For maintained schools this is reflected in the law, which states that the purpose of maintained school governing bodies is to ‘conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school’…governing bodies should have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  2. Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent’.

The structure of our Governing Body is:

  • 4 Co-opted governors. These governors are appointed by the Governing Body,
  • The Head Teacher. This role is held ex-officio,
  • 1 LA (Local Authority) Governor. Hertfordshire nominate candidates who are then voted in by the Governing Body,
  • 4 Parent Governors who are appointed following parental elections,
  • 1 Staff Governor who is appointed following a staff election.

We also have several sub-committees each with a specific area of focus who look in more detail at specific issues and make decisions as appropriate or make recommendations to the full governing body.  We operate the following committees who usually meet on a termly basis:

  • Finance, Personnel and Premises (FPP),
  • School Improvement Committee (SIC) who focus on the curriculum and pupil attainment and progress,
  • Other committees such as the Pay Committee meet on a more irregular basis as required.

We also operate a system of link governors where individual governors take on responsibility for specific subject areas, such as SEND or Special Educational Needs and Disability, Safeguarding, Core Subjects, PE, Humanities, Early Years etc. Such governors will meet with their link members of staff and may sit in on part of lessons to understand how these topics are being managed.

As a Governing Body we have decided to appoint the Deputy Head as an Associate Member. The Governing Body have decided to award Associate Members full voting rights at committee level. We currently have one Associate member, the Deputy Head, Miss Davis.

More about our Governors:

Janice Forbes

I am currently a Co-opted governor and have been a governor for a number of years. I am the Learning Mentor at Alban Wood. I currently sit on the FPP committee.

Mark Ford

I have been a governor at Alban Wood since 2003 and am currently Chair of Governors. I attend the School Improvement and Finance, Personnel & Premises committees. My two oldest children went to Alban Wood and my  youngest is in Key Stage 2.

Liz Griffiths

I joined the Governing Body in December 2014. I was a teacher for 36 years in schools in London and Hertfordshire and 13 years as Head Teacher of an Infant and Nursery School. I retired in August 2014 but wanted to continue being linked with children, schools and education. I am really excited about being part of Alban Wood School community and being involved in the life of the school.

Megan Maclean

I have been a Staff Governor at Alban Wood School since September 2013. I have been at the school for a number of years now, teaching in Years 1 and 2. I am a member of the School Improvement Committee and hope that I will be able to use my experience to contribute in any way I can. I like experiencing the school from a different perspective and learning more about how the school works. I enjoy hobbies such as reading, shopping and spending time with friends and family.

Mark Munday

I am currently a Co-opted Governor and have been a governor for a number of years. I have two boys at Alban Wood. I attend the Finance, Personnel and Premises committee and have a particular interest in Health and Safety.

Erica Tuxworth

I have been a Governor for over 6 years. I am the Pastor of the Church  and Vice Chair of the Governing Body. I also Chair the School Improvement Committee and offer any Pastoral care that may be needed in the school and community.

Carole Stroud

I am new to the governing body, after applying as Parent Governor earlier this month. My background is in administration work, running  Rainbows, and various other children clubs/activities.  I currently have a child in key stage two, although I have been a parent of Alban Wood for sixteen years! As our children are our future, I would like to draw on my skills to help nurture, encourage and be proud of our wonderful children.

Tracey Hoodless

I am a new Parent Governor who joined in May 2016 and I am a member of the School Improvement Committee.  My work background is in project management and I am a proud parent of a child in Year 2 following in my footsteps at Alban Wood.  I look forward to helping support the amazing work of the school in striving to provide the best possible education and opportunities for our wonderful children.

Katrina Tullberg

I have been a Parent Governor since December 2016.  My work background is in social housing, overseeing the letting of properties and monitoring the performance of the team.  My children are currently in Reception and Year Two, and I am enjoying learning more about all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at the school.  I look forward to doing what I can to ensure Alban Wood continues to be a school we can all be proud of and that meets the needs of all of our children.
